This class focused on the study of different groups and cultures who come together to form groups of learners.  The class looked carefully at what it meant to be cohesive group of learners and how that definition ranges cultures, classes, races, and locations. One project for this class was to create a critical analysis in the form of a visual representation of several researches presented in the class readings. This presentation made concrete the different ways in which people learn and learn together.

ED 800 Concepts of Educational Inquiry

Steven Weiland
Nathan Clason

This class was a foundational course, covering a wide range of topics.  Of the questions posed by this class, the most  intriguing was how do we learn and what is most worth knowing and how are individual, institutional, and social views of education and the curriculum at all levels reconciled?  This class opened the door for thinking critically about education as a whole and how it fits in with a the goals of the educator and the goals of society.

CEP 882  Seminar in CEP - Creating Inspirational & Compelling Learning Experiences

David Wong

This class was an eye-opening journey through the ways in which educators can take cues from other disciplines and professions in order to create exciting experiences in the classroom.  By looking at other educators, fashion designers, technology developers, movie directors, musicians, and composers we looked critically at how the elements of their work could influence our own classroom teaching style.  Projects for this class included several "Two Minute Moment" videos that illustrated the concepts of a compelling experience.

EAD 830 Urban Education and the Racial Achievement Gap

Christopher Dunbar

Urban Education and the Racial Achievement Gap analyized the complex nature of urban schools and the growing issues surrounding the racial achievement gap.  While a complicated subject, this class attempted to compare and contrast the major view regarding the achievement gap and the different theories related to closing the achievement gap. Working at the time with urban, minority students this was a particularly compelling class.

EAD 870 Capstone Seminar

Brittany Dillman

Spencer Greenhaigh

Sarah Keenan

Matthew Koehler

This course gave students an opportunity to reflect on all of their coursework at MSU and prepare a wholisitic review of thier succcess in the Masters of Education program. Coursework largely focused on a large portfolio presentation.  This interactive online portfolio was built over the course of the semester and engaged studetns in active reflection on their teaching and academic pursuits. The writings and portfolio prepartaion for this class gave me the opportunity to reexamine my goals as they stood upon entering graduate school and prepare goals for my teaching after graduation.

THE EDUCATION JOURNEY

Below you will find list of the courses I have taken at Michigan State Univeristy and thier application to teaching and educaitonal leadership practices.

CEP 816 Teaching with Technology Across the Curriculum

Rand Spiro

Hannah Klautke

It is a digital age, and digital, random access media are in significant ways different from the instructional materials of traditional instruction.  This course analyzed  the assumption that new media make possible new and important kinds of learning and teaching that were hard to achieve with traditional instructional approaches.  The class looked carefully at the best applications for new technology, critically comparing its use to traditional teaching methods.  CEP 816 introduced me to the vast number of OER (Open Educational Resources) that are popping up in great numbers and thier usefulness in spreading good educational practices, resources, and materials.

EAD 801 Leadership and Organizational Development

BetsAnn Smith

EAD 801 delved into the ways in which effective leaders are created and how leaders manage thier environment in ways that foster good growth, trust, and support from their peers.  This class looked carefully at leaders in different professions and how their interactions with coworkers, conflict resolution strategies, relationships with subordinates, and collaboration with peers were influential in their success.  A semester long project enabled students to examine an issue they were actively involved with and apply the course research and readings towards a hypothetical solution.

TE 818 Teaching and its Social Context

Lynn Fendler

Eujung Jin

This class took a broad look at four themes involved in curriculum study.  Those included Standards, Testing, and Curriculum; Diversity, Diverse Learners, and Curriculum; and Technology and its applications to Curriculum Development.  Each section examined its relevance to American education and its connection to curriculum development. TE 818 was a fascinating look at the current trends in curriculum study and how they relate to or have diverged from past trends in education.

TE 823 Learning Communities and Equity

David Davenport

Underlying the analysis of different learning communities, this class continually examined issues of equity in education.  Through the lenses of community and equity the class approached a number of topics including:

  • what does it mean to educate?

  • what is a learning community?

  • how do learning communities help drive achievement?

  • should students be grouped, tracked, or categorized in and outside of the classroom?

  • what kind of effect does tracking and curriculum trends have on students?
